Josh Abbott

Humboldt State University, CA

Greetings all, I'm looking forward to a full week of some interesting mathematics with a group of people who really want to be there doing the work. I live in Arcata, CA where it's nice to be able to step right off campus and be in the middle of a Redwood forest. I spend most of my time working on computer security and doing homework, but I also am big into playing foosball, playing go, making electronic music, playing with integers, and witty banter with friends.

Kyle Anderson

University of North Carolina Asheville,NC

My name is Kyle Anderson.  I am a senior in both math and computer science at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.  I've lived in beautiful for most of my life, but originally, I am from across the peninsula in Stuart, Fla. Currently I am working on my own undergraduate research project in fractal geometry and that will hopefully be completed by the time of our retreat.  I am also an ultimate player, and co-captain of the UNCA team.  Over the summer, I plan on doing some freelance web design to make some money.  I'll see you all in June.

Kristy Beam

Lenoir-Rhyne College, NC

I live in the little town of Belews Creek, NC.  Although it may only have 1000 people, it has its own lake.  I enjoy boating, jet skiing, jumping off of rope swings, and kayaking while I am at home.  We also have four dogs and a one-eyed cat.  When I'm at school my biggest priority is being the president of our Intervarsity Christian Fellowship chapter.  But I also play intramural basketball, play bass clarinet in the Concert Band and Keyboard in our IVCF praise band, and actively hike/raft/camp with our Outdoor Adventure Club.  This year I have also become one of the most avid fans of our baseball team, mainly because my boyfriend is one of their pitchers.  In addition to the PascGalois Retreat, my plans for this summer are to work for our county school system's Network Communications Department, which involves me installing cable, testing cable, designing databases, and managing the budget.  And hopefully I can make several weekend trips to the beach and get some surfing in.  That's me in a nutshell.  I'm looking forward to meeting you all.

Katelin Childers

New College of Florida, FL

My name is Katelin Childers.  I am a first year student at New College and have lived in Warrenton, VA (about an hour outside Washington, D.C.) for my whole life.  I love camping, reading, math and word puzzles, baking, sewing, writing letters, and going to the beach.  I enjoy doing anything math related and hope to apply it to an engineering career and to work with alternative energy sources.  I'm very excited about the retreat this summer and can't wait to meet everyone!

Julie Coxe

James Madison University, VA

Hello everyone! My name is Julie Coxe. I am from the small wonder (Delaware…. that’s east of MD for anyone wondering) and I currently attend JMU in Harrisonburg, VA where I’m majoring in Math and minoring in French and Statistics.  Since most everyone disclosed their favorite topics in math, I will follow their lead and say that Calculus is my personal favorite.  At school I play the piccolo in the Marching Royal Dukes Marching Band and I’m the Senior Warden of the Episcopal Campus Ministry.  If I could spend my summer anyway I wanted, I’d live at one of the DE beaches and I’d alternate days going to the beach and waterskiing in the bay.  However, since that is not possible, I’ll be working at a restaurant or a retail store somewhere in town.  My favorites are lime green, crocheting, root beer, and James Taylor (the old guy who sings).  See you in a few weeks!!!

Erin Craig

New College of Florida, FL

My name is Erin Craig and I'm in my first year at New College as a math major. I live in Sarasota now, but I grew up in Toledo, Ohio (the heart of the Midwest!). I am a ballet dancer, and I love music, people, learning, and trying new things. I'm really very excited about attending PascGalois and working with math and other math-minded people! I can't wait to meet everyone!

Didi Desjardins

Holy Cross College, MA

Hi everyone, my name is Didi Desjardins and I'm from Dartmouth, MA. I'm a junior at Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and I'm a math major and chemistry minor. I'm also planning to apply to medical school next year, I actually just took the MCAT yesterday...so I'm definitely glad that's over with! Most of my research so far has been in applied mathematics, so I'm pretty excited to expand my research into algebra. Well I guess it's back to work for me, I've got a lot of catching up to do now...can't wait to meet you all!

Ryan Johnson

University of Mary Washington, VA

I wanted to give you a bit of information about myself along with a picture.  I am a Christian who is actively involved with the campus ministries at UMW.  I enjoy mountain biking, ping pong, Volleyball and pretty much any other sport.  I have a love for mathematics and often work on problems in my spare time when I'm not doing one of my other passions.  I am a rising senior chemistry and math double major who is looking to go to graduate school in mathematics in pursuit of a PhD.

Casey Kuhn

Pittsburg State University, KS

My name is Casey Kuhn.  I am 21 and a senior in Math Education at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas (not to be confused with Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).  I am getting a minor in English Speakers of Other Languages.  I have taken many math classes, including Abstract Algebra where I was exposed to Pascal's Triangle and the many applications of it.  I am the vice-president of service for Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed national service fraternity, so I spend a great deal of time doing community service.  In my free time, I enjoy playing tennis, cooking, and solving Sudoku puzzles.

Chen Liu

Loyola College, MD

My name is Cen-bi Liu. I am a freshman at Loyola College in Maryland. I came from China three years ago. I am always called “Chen” by my friends, like Jackie “Chan”. I was selected as a Resident Assistant for seniors as a sophomore next year, i.e. I will be the only one who is under 21, and 21 is the legal age to drink. I always want to “commit suicide” because I major in Engineering and Mathematics and Physics and work several jobs during the school year. During the past Spring Break, I volunteered for a community at Fries, VA, because the name sounds delicious ( I have done a great deal of community service like Casey Kuhn). It will be my first time to come to Florida, the Sunshine/Hurricane state. I am a huge Baltimore Orioles’ fan, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays is in the same division with Orioles. So,…Anyway, I like to meet new people and make friends with them, especially those who like math.

Christian Millichap

Dickinson College, PA

My name is Christian Millichap.  I'm currently a sophomore at Dickinson College (middle of nowhere Pennsylvania), majoring in both Math and Philosophy.  I'm the president of the Ultimate Frisbee Club at my school, and I spend as much time as possible playing the sport.  I also like playing hockey, running, and going to concerts.  During the summer I will probably lifeguard and tutor math to high school students.

Faculty/TA's /Assistant Profile

Dr. Mike Bardzell

Salisbury University, MD

My name is Mike Bardzell and I am one of the PI's on the PascGalois
grant. I did my undergraduate work in Physics at Mary Washington College in Virginia and then did my Ph.D. in Mathematics (Ring Theory) at Virginia Tech. I am in my tenth year now at Salisbury University.
Undergraduate Research has been a passion of mine since I came to
Salisbury. Hopefully, this retreat will be a valuable experience for the
exceptional group of young mathematicians that we have recruited for
this event. When I am not working on mathematics and other work related issues, I enjoy playing soccer, running, and camping with my kids. In the rare event that I get to visit far away places (the picture is from a visit to see my Dad in Switzerland), I also enjoy hiking. I looks
forward to working with each of you in June. I have noticed from the
posted student profiles that several of you are ultimate frisbee
players. I also played ultimate throughout high school and college. It
appears that some pick-up games may be on our agenda for this retreat!

Aaron Churchill

Salisbury University, MD

Hi all, my name is Aaron Churchill, and I am graduating from Salisbury
University this semester.  In the fall, I will be attending the
University of Delaware in the Ph.D. program for mathematics.  While at

I am looking forward to meeting all of you!
Jonathon Miller

Salisbury University, MD

My name is Jonathon Miller.  I was home-schooled until the age of 16, at
which time I started attending Chesapeake College. I continued my
studies there for the next four semesters.  At the age of 18 I transferred to Salisbury University where I  will be graduating from in a couple of weeks with a Bachelors in Math. Last summer I did some research on infinite cellular automata and will be publishing it at some point in the future. I also am graduating with departmental honors for the research I started last year at the PascGalois retreat. Next semester I plan on attending the University of Maryland, College Park, where I will be beginning my work on a PhD in Mathematics in the field of Abstract Algebra. In my free time I really enjoy writing programs. Some for creating fractals in the Complex Plane using Julia sets for quadratic functions, or parts of the Mandelbrot set. Next I would like to write a program that will add color to the fractals and compute the Julia sets for functions other than quadratics.

Dr. Eirini Poimenidou

New College of Florida, FL

Hi PG-ers 2006! I am Eirini (pronounced ee-REE-nee) Poimenidou and I have just completed my thirteenth year of teaching at New College, the Honors College of the state of Florida. Dr. Kathleen Shannon

Salisbury University, MD

My name is Kathleen Shannon, I received a BA in mathematics and physics from the College of the Holy Cross and then my Ph.D. in applied
mathematics from Brown University.  I am presently the chair of the
Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Salisbury University where I have been on the faculty for 17 years.  The initial impetus for the PascGalois project came from some programming I did on sabbatical to investigate patterns in Pascal's triangle .... but I don't  want to give away too much of my welcoming lecture.  I'm looking forward to meeting all of you.  In my spare time I like to travel and indulge my expensive photography hobby so the photo is one I took at Glacier National Park.

Dr. Don Spickler

Salisbury University, MD

My name is Don Spickler, I am a faculty member in the Department of
Mathematics and Computer Science at Salisbury University.  My main job on the PascGalois project is to convert the PascGalois GT program to
Java and add some features.  At the retreat I will mainly be there to
facilitate the use of the PascGalois JE program and pick up some ideas
for the next version.  The image is an approximation to the Sierpinski
Pyramid; its dimension is about 2.321928095.  The image was produced in POV-Ray with 78,125 solid pyramids, 3 light sources and one reflective plane, which took about an hour to generate on a Pentium III 1.066 GHz computer.
