(March 17, 2010) New Music New College has announced that cellist Darrett Adkins will replace Victoria Bass at the fifth and final program of its 2009-2010 season on Saturday, April 24 at 8 pm in the Mildred Sainer Pavilion. The Division of Humanities is sponsoring a writing workshop and poetry reading March 30 and 31. Guest writer Yael Flusberg will lead a Freewriting Workshop entitled “Writing from the Well Within” on Tuesday, March 30, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, in the Jane Bancroft Cook Library, room 248. On Wednesday, March 31, Flusberg will give a poetry reading from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in College Hall. Refreshments will be provided. Both events are free and open to the public. (March 15, 2010) At its February 20 meeting, the New College Board of Trustees approved tenure for two New College professors: Carrie Beneš, assistant professor of history; and Wendy Sutherland, assistant professor of German language and literature. At the same meeting, Provost Charlene Callahan reported that four veteran faculty members were recommended for promotion from associate to full professor: Richard Coe to professor of economics; Elzie McCord, Jr. to professor of biology; José Alberto Portugal to professor of Spanish language and literature; and Miriam Wallace to professor of English. March 12, 2010 – New College of Florida Associate Professor of Political Science Frank Alcock, a Fellow with the Collins Center for Public Policy, will present the Center’s report entitled “Potential Impacts of Oil & Gas Exploration in the Gulf” to the Florida House of Representatives Select Policy Council on Strategic & Economic Planning in Tallahassee on Monday, March 15. Newell Seminar on Monday, March 29, entitled “Stressors in Estuaries: A Multiple Stakeholder Approach.” The event will take place at 4:00 pm in the Soo Bong Chae Auditorium in the Heiser Natural Sciences Complex (500 College Drive) on the College’s Bayfront Campus. The keynote speaker for the event is Dr. James Sanders, director of the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography. The event is free and open to the public. (March 8, 2010) Clear skies and plenty of sunshine greeted more than 150 faculty, students, staff and visitors to campus today as New College of Florida celebrated the groundbreaking for the College’s new Public Archaeology Lab. Nestled among Hong Kong orchid trees and towering pines, the new lab features more than 1,600 square feet of classroom, office and storage space for faculty and student research on local and regional history. (March 8, 2010) A trip down College Drive will now offer visitors respite from the Florida sun. Thirteen large southern shade oaks were planted along College Drive on February 23, as well as one along Dort Promenade. The addition of shade trees is a key component of the College’s developing Landscape Master Plan. New College of Florida math students are calculating on the successful return of a popular program for the local community. Every Sunday from February 28 through May 9, the students are offering a free math clinic to people of all ages in Sarasota and Manatee counties. The walk-in clinic operates out of the Selby Public Library (1331 First Street, 941-861-1120) in downtown Sarasota between 2:00 and 4:00 pm. (more…) |
