2012 Keynote Address

New College of Florida: [Coffee] Grounds for Success!
How a Liberal Arts Education Can Transform Business

Alumnus Jonathan Smiga and graduating senior Johannah Birney spoke about how their New College education helped them get where they are (or where they are going). Smiga is the CEO of Barnie’sCoffeeKitchen™, formerly known as Barnie’s Coffee & Tea Company. He earned a B.A. from New College in Humanities.

Birney graduated from New College in 2012 with a B.A. in Environmental Studies. Born into the restaurant business, her research focused on food as a leverage point from which to influence society. After graduating, she assumed the helm of the Four Winds Café, an on-campus student-owned dining establishment created from a student Independent Study Project. Her goal: a four-star Green Restaurant rating.
