Stop 4: Recreation
Florida is the sunshine state. So it's little wonder with our waterfront campus and year-round warm temperatures that outdoor activities and bare feet symbolize the personal freedom of New College.

If you're into fitness, our professionally managed recreation center features racquetball courts, Nautilus room, dance/exercise room, lighted tennis and basketball courts, a 25-meter swimming pool, a whirlpool, and a multi-purpose playing field for softball, soccer, and Frisbee. You can also check out sports equipment, including gear for camping and scuba diving. Members have access to a variety of strength and cardiovascular equipment, including Lifecycle and Schwinn stationary bikes, Stairmaster step machines, a Quinton treadmill and a Concept II rower. We offer a variety of classes and workshops as well as information sessions on health and nutrition.  The co-founder of a contemporary dance company is an adjunct faculty member, so dance classes are offered on a regular basis. We have an active Fencing Club.

If you prefer the water, our Caples Campus provides a launch site for canoes and small sailboats (both of which are available for student use).  The Sailing Club is very popular. In March 2007, New College made its first-ever foray into intercollegiate sailing competition when the newly sanctioned New College of Florida Sailing Team fielded a crew in a regatta at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. Competitive sailing is a natural fit for New College, not only because we front on Sarasota Bay, but because sailing involves physics, mathematics and other studies in which New College students excel.

The beaches here are beyond compare. To the north, Anna Maria Island has many public beaches and a very distinctive, funky culture. A few miles to the south, there is beautiful Lido Beach, and further south is the most magnificent beach of all, Siesta Beach, with its wide swath of pedal-soft, pearly-white sand that has contributed to its top international ranking.

Myakka State Park, about 15 miles from campus, is Florida’s largest state park, and it’s a good place to view birds, alligators and other wildlife. There is a fresh water lake, river, wetlands, pine flatwoods and prairie. There’s also canoeing, picnicking, hiking and camping, as there is at Oscar Scherer State Park as well. Mote Marine Laboratory on City Island offers an informative introduction to Gulf Marine life. Many New College students intern at Mote Marine. If you like biking –and most of our students do-- there is now a scenic bike path all the way from Venice to St. Petersburg.

Recreation can be defined as almost anything that is relaxing. Sometimes it’s fun just to hang out in our thriving downtown, located two miles from campus. You can watch children play near the dolphin sculpture at a bayside park, broaden your horizons at our monumental Season of Sculpture, explore the aisles at Whole Foods Market, or simply enjoy a great sunset on a swing made for two.
