The centerpiece of Caples is the Mildred Sainer Fine Arts Pavilion, named for an accomplished violinist and music enthusiast who played her Stradivarius in the Florida West Coast Symphony for 22 years. The 257-seat auditorium combines the acoustic perfection of a concert hall with the intimacy of a private music chamber. It is ideal for solo or duo recital, small instrumental groups, lectures and small dramatic productions. (Our own contemporary series, New Music New College, holds most of its events here.) The lobby doubles as a reception area and a visual arts exhibition space.
At the Lota Mundy Music Building, the needs of the New College music students have been collected and conveniently housed under one roof. The building features an electronic music studio with equipment for both digital and analog musical composition, four practice rooms and several audio-equipped seminar rooms and office/studios. The music theory curriculum incorporates projects using the latest computer technology and software. Lota Mundy was one of Sarasota’s leading musicians, teachers and benefactors and until her death in 1970’s was one of the Florida West Coast Symphony’s most active and generous supporters.
The studios and galleries of the Christiane Felsmann and Betty Isermann Fine Arts Buildings are flooded with natural light. Felsmann features space for painting, design and drawing and print-making, as well as dedicated studio space for visual arts majors. Isermann serves as a teaching facility and gallery, where student exhibitions are ongoing and evaluations and critiques can be given outside of the busy classroom environment.
The Sculpture Building features a woodworking and welding shop, a four-foot high kiln for ceramic sculpture, a fully-stocked tool room, an outdoor slab and an immense sculpture studio with a 21 foot ceiling. The flexible nature of these spaces allows students to be as creative as possible – without size limitations. A seminar room with library is available for slide lectures and discussions.
At the heart of the Caples Fine Arts Complex is the PepsiCo Arcade and Forum, designed in the Mediterranean Revival Style of nearby Caples Hall. The colonnade and large, grassy courtyard form an oasis where music, art and sculpture classes gather for an outdoor session, and where artists can build and exhibit larger-scale pieces. A small stage carved into the back of the Mildred Sainer Music Pavilion overlooks the courtyard, providing a year-round platform for outdoor theatrical performances, concerts and receptions.
