SYLVIA SLEIGH

Adrian, Dennis and Bowman, Russell. Sylvia Sleigh: Invitation to a Voyage and Other Works. Milwaukee Arts Museum: 3-13. [RINGLING MUSEUM OF ART LIBRARY:

This resource was definitive, as it discussed more works than any of the others (in greater detail), and included more images than any of the others. It not only covered her more popular pieces, but others that did not receive mention elsewhere. It also included biographical information. I felt it to be the most comprehensive of all the sources. However, it was only definitive in so far as there really is not a definitive source as of yet. -CS 2002.

Brown, Betty Ann. (1997) Dictionary of Women Artists v. 2 London and Chicago: Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers; 1280-1.

This source was decent because it gave specific dates and years for the biography that were not included in other sources. Otherwise, it was a typical dictionary glimpse, although it included quotes from the artist and specific ideas about paintings.-CS 2002.

Johnson, K. "Sylvia Sleigh", Art in America 82, no. 12 (Dec 1994): 98-99.

This article was not very helpful because none of the images were included. As there really is no conclusive monograph on Sylvia Sleigh, it makes the criticisms rather useless. -CS 2002.

Nochlin, Linda. Arts Magazine. Arts Digest Inc, NY. May 1974 (Volume 48, No 8). "Some Women Realists-Painters of the Future," 29-33.

This article was useful because Nochlin included many insights into the work that Sleigh did in the 1970's. It also included a useful image. Although the focus seemed to lean towards the feminist ideology embodied by Sleigh's work, it also included the harsh criticisms made about her work that seemed highly unfounded. Although the pieces that were focused on were the most common ones (e.g. Turkish Bath), it was still an illuminating source.

Rubinstein, Charlotte Streifer. (1982) American Women Artists from Early Indian Times to the Present. Boston: Avon Publishers of Bard, Camelot, Discus, and Flare Books; 401-403.

This was a helpful reference, especially in depicting the sexism Sleigh experienced in her youth. It also connected her to other feminists of the time, as well as anti-discriminatory campaigns. It is useful, but unfortunately does not talk about any works in great detail, aside from the frequently discussed Turkish Bath.-CS 2002.

This article was a nice insight into the work Invitation to a Voyage: The Hudson River at Fishkill. It also included a large part of the riverside scene, not found in any of the other sources. A good description of the mood and idea of the piece are captured in this article. - CS 2002.
