WEEK 1.2: FRIDAY 9 FEBRUARY 2007
Euripides, The Bacchae,
Read and be ready to discuss in class.
Some questions for discussion:
1. What is the character of Dionysus?
2. Characterize the differences between the two groups of Maenads
(Chorus from Asia and Theban women of the mountains)
3. Pentheus is hardly a sympathetic character but he does have a position he takes vis a vis the situation he finds upon his return to Thebes. From Pentheus' point of view as the King of Thebes what does he find and what does he propose to do about it?
4. While Gods appear in Greek Tragedies regularly, they usually appear only in the prologue or the epilogue, why do we have Dionysus speaking in the prologue, and the epilogue and also acting as a character within the drama?
What is the impact of this on our experience of the god?
5. Be prepared to discuss the various types of madness that are described or shown in the play.
