This course is designed to introduce students to the invertebrates. Though invertebrates make up more than 90% of the world of animals, seldom do students have the opportunity to explore more than a few phyla. We will examine the complex form and function of these animals as well as their behaviors.

Evaluation will rest upon 3 criteria: biweekly quizzes, a reflective notebook, and a final project. The quizzes are cumulative so there will be no final. Unless otherwise stated, reworks of quizzes will be due one week after evaluated work is returned. The notebook should include: 1) responses to questions assigned from class, 2) assignments from handouts, 3) comments on outside readings (including the final project) and 4) self-evaluation. Students are responsible for doing the outside readings in a timely manner; material will be useful on relevant quizzes. The final project will be a group effort (2-3 students) based on ecocolumn observations. Other types of projects will be considered. All work is due by 5:00 pm on Monday of break week. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR EVALUATION. Below is a tentative schedule. Some flexibility should be expected.

The final presentations will be as follows:

Posters will be displayed for all to view and comment upon for first 30 minutes; poster groups will give a short overview for the remaining class time. Other presentations will be a maximum of 15 minutes each. Students are required to comment on content and style of presentations. The review comments on posters and presentations should be a part of the notebook.
