New College’s greatest need is for a strong endowment to help sustain its outstanding academic performance. An endowment fund requires that the principal be maintained intact in perpetuity and invested to create a source of income for New College. Donors may set up an endowment to fund a specific interest or monies may go into a general unrestricted endowment fund.
Unrestricted endowment is a key component of The New College Promise Campaign, with plans to double the College’s unrestricted endowment via outright and planned gifts. The Bob Johnson Endowment for Academic Excellence was created in 2011 to become the keystone endowment of the campaign. The Endowment honors former Senator Bob Johnson who time and again, brokered complex agreements that ensured New College’s early survival and eventual place as the much-lauded Honors College of the State University System. Along the way, Senator Johnson served for many years on the College and Foundation boards and is currently chair of the New College Board of Trustees.
Restricted endowments are also needed for scholarships, named faculty chairs, and student research and travel funds. Endowments are essential to ensure New College remains one of the country’s finest, most affordable and distinctive undergraduate colleges.
