Provost's Biography

Dr. Samuel Savin has been Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at New College of Florida since July 2006. As Chief Academic Officer, the Provost is responsible for administering the academic program and aligning the College's administrative and support functions with its academic mission. In addition to his role as Provost, Dr. Savin has lectured for several courses, sponsored tutorials and served as a thesis sponsor.

Dr. Savin came to New College from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where he was the Jesse Earl Hyde Professor of Geological Sciences and served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Colgate University and a doctorate in Geochemistry from the California Institute of Technology. As a scientist he has worked on many aspects of geology, geochemistry, oceanography and the history of the earth’s climate.

He is the author of a laboratory and exercise manual for undergraduate students in oceanography and has served as a member of the editorial boards of Annual Reviews of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, Marine Micropaleontology, and Paleogeography, Paleoclimatology, Paleoecology.
