Professor Hicks's research specialization is in Central and Eastern Europe

Barbara Hicks

Associate Professor of Political Science

Professor Hicks teaches courses on the politics of Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, the European Union, and China, as well as thematic courses on the Collapse of Communism and Women after Communism.  She also teaches the introductory course in comparative politics and an advanced seminar in Transitions to Democracy, both of which take a cross-regional approach.

Her research specialization is in Central and Eastern Europe, and she's currently working on a book about how transnational influences affect the role of social movements as channels of citizen participation in the new democracies of Central Europe.
