Eligibility

Students are required to complete their first two contracts on campus before off-campus study can begin. Off-campus study (OCS) can begin in the second year and extend into the third year. Fourth years may occasionally study off-campus during the first semester of fourth year if the work directy supports thesis research. The final contract must be completed on campus. In total, you can study off-campus for up to three semesters. All plans for OCS should start with a discussion between you and your faculty sponsor.

For transfer students, OCS eligibility requirements are modified. Contracts transferred into New College are equated to contracts completed off campus. If one contract is transferred to New College, then the eligible time allowed to study off campus is reduced to two semesters; if two contracts are transferred,
then one semester. If three, then study off-campus is not allowed with the normal framework. Exceptions to the policy may be granted with support of your faculty advisor and permission of the Provost.

Self-Funded Study Abroad

All students are eligible for one year of Leave of Absence, without penalty. During Leave of Absence, self-funded study abroad is an option. New College scholarships will not apply.

Students with Areas of Concentration in International Studies should study abroad for a semester or summer. A full semester is preferable. Of course, you may study up to three semesters as well, as outlined above. In unusual circumstances, another significant multicultural experience may be substituted for this requirement of International Studies. It requires approval of the International Studies Comnittee and the student's own baccalaureate committee.
