Paying for Off-Campus Study

There are a number of funding sources available to help pay for Off-Campus Study or OCS: scholarships, grants and financial aid can all be used.  Also it is important to note that in some cases you are responsible for paying the OCS program directly, in others,  you make direct payment to New College.

Scholarships

Bright Futures Scholarships

Bright Futures scholarships only apply to:
  • Programs sponsored by Florida universities
  • The National Student Exchange
  • Independcnt tutorials equivalent to one contract
If you're using Bright Futures to pay for OCS and have been accepted into a program, the money that ordinarily pays your New College tuition will be refunded direcdy to you. It is your responsibility to make payment to your program. New College does not make payment on your behalf. To receive the largest amount of Bright Futures funding for study abroad, you should enroll in 16 credit hours of studies at your host institution. While New College technically does not have credit hours, financial aid is awarded for your regular term based on New College enrollment of an equivalent 16 credit hours. If you enroll in only 12-credit hours elsewhere while on OCS, your Bright Futures will be reduced accordingly (from the dollars associated with16 credit hours to those associated with 12 credit hours.

Grants

Start an early search to find grants and awards to help fund your studies. In cases of money awarded by New College, your chances of receiving an award are enhanced if the study abroad is directy related to your thesis or research endeavors.
  • New College Foundation Research & Travel grants
  • New College Student Alliance, Council of Academic Affairs grants
  • Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
  • New College Office of Research Programs. View the IRIS database

Financial Aid

Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions regarding financial aid and OCS. Please contact the Financial Aid Office for more information.

Can I use my current Financial Aid to pay for Off-Campus Study?

The chart below lists all financial aid awards and for which programs they can be paid.

Where will my Financial Aid be disbursed when I am Off-Campus?

Financial Aid funds are disbursed the third week of classes. You must meet with a representative of the Financial Aid Office before filing. The required paperwork must be completed and processed before funds will be disbursed. Fall disbursements will not occur until mid-to-late September and Spring disbursements will not occur until mid-to-late February. The disbursements are paid to your New College account. Refund checks are then mailed to the U.S. mailing address you have provided.

Will I be required to pay fees to to my host institution before I receive my Financial Aid?

Probably. It is your responsibility to make arrangements to make payment to the school or study abroad organization that is providing your program. The host institution may require payment before you receive all of your Financial Aid.

I do not have loans right now, can I still apply for them?

Yes, you will need to complete the free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the current school year to become eligible for student loans. You should apply at least eight to twelve weeks prior to the beginning of the semester to allow enough time to process the loans. Everyone qualifies for Stafford loans, regardless of income level.

Are there additional loans available along with Stafford Loans?

Yes, there are Parent Loans (PLUS) and alternative loans available.
