Requirements for an area of concentration
in Sociology

NOTE:  Prior to submitting a "Provisional Area of Concentration" form, each student will now be required to pass a "portfolio review."  See details below.

The sociology program at New College combines background training in the essentials of theory, method, and statistics, with exposure to a variety of subfields within the discipline. Students wishing to graduate with a major in sociology will be required to complete, as a minimum, the following "core" of course work:

  • Social Theory
  • Research Methods
  • Statistics
  • A minimum of two full term courses (or the equivalent) in macrosociology (e.g., Social Stratification, Urban Sociology, Work Organizations, Sociology of Development, etc.).
  • A minimum of two full term courses (or the equivalent) in microsociology (e.g. Socialization, Social Psychology, Gerontology, Phenomenological Sociology, etc.).

Students will also be required to complete:

  • One independent study project devoted to gathering and analysis of empirical data. This ISP can involve any of a variety of research methods (quantitative, qualitative, historical) on any topic in the field. Ideally, it should be completed prior to the thesis year, and should be distinct from the thesis project itself.
  • A senior thesis that makes use of a sociological approach and methods. Students are expected to participate in the Sociology Senior Seminar in the fall of their thesis year.

In addition to this core of work within the field, sociology majors will be expected to design a coherent program that includes courses in other disciplines that complement their work in sociology and support their particular interests in the discipline. For example, a student interested in urban sociology might include relevant courses in history, economics, and politics; a student interested in the sociology of the family will want to take relevant courses in psychology and anthropology. Students should give some thought to particular areas of interest within sociology, and discuss possibilities with their adviser. Internships and off-campus study are also recommended as supplements to the New College course offerings.

Provisional Area of Concentration: Portfolio Review.

Prior to declaring an area of concentration in Sociology, students are required to undergo a review and assessment of their work by at least two faculty members in Sociology Since the Provisional Area of Concentration form is due by the end of the 5th semester, the review will typically take place during their fifth semester or contract, prior to the signing of the form by the faculty sponsors.

For the fifth semester review, a student must submit a portfolio containing a copy of his or her working transcript, and at least 2 writing samples from courses in sociology. S/he must have taken at least 2 sociology classes at New College.

Students changing area of concentration must fulfill the basic requirements to be considered as candidates for a concentration in Sociology. Students transferring from other institutions will also be reviewed under the same guidelines, with the exception that the two sociology courses can be from another undergraduate institution. Transfer students may be asked to submit transcript, course descriptions and syllabi from the other institution as part of their portfolio, if they wish courses taken at another institution to be considered.
