Scholarships for Out-of-State1 Freshmen

Our Scholarship Guarantee

You will receive scholarship funding to attend New College if:
  1. all of your required admission materials are on file by February 15, 2011; and
  2. you are admitted to New College for Fall 2011 as a first-time-in-college student; and
  3. you are a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident Alien, or eligible non-citizen2.
All required materials (including official transcripts, exam scores, and the recommendation) must be postmarked or transmitted on or before the deadline and received by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid no later than 10 days after that deadline.  (As available, scholarship funding will be considered for eligible students who complete the admission application file by April 15, 2011.)

Tuition and scholarship funding amounts are tied to Florida's State University System rules for residency. For more information on residency contact your admissions counselor.

The following scholarships are awarded based upon your Institutional Rating.3

We award these scholarships by calculating your SAT Critical Reading and Math scores, as well as your adjusted high school GPA.3 (If you took the ACT, use this Conversion Chart to convert your score).

New College National Scholarship Program4

These scholarships are awarded on the basis of standing in the National Merit Scholarship Program, National Achievement Scholarship Program, or National Hispanic Recognition Program.

Excellence Award—$17,500 ($70,000 over four years)
For the Excellence Award, you must be one of the following:
  • National Achievement® Finalist, and select New College as your first-choice school according to National Merit Scholarship Corporation procedures5; or
  • National Hispanic Scholar, recognized by the College Board National Hispanic Recognition Program; or
  • National Merit® Finalist, and select New College as your first-choice school according to National Merit Scholarship Corporation procedures6
National Scholar Award—$14,000 ($56,000 over four years)
For the National Scholar Award, you must be one of the following:
  • National Achievement® Semifinalist or Outstanding Participant, recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation National Achievement Program; or
  • National Hispanic Honorable Mention recipient, recognized by the College Board National Hispanic Recognition Program; or
  • National Merit® Semifinalist, recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
A New College National Scholarship Program Award replaces the Four Winds Award.

Affinity Awards

  • Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE)
  • FEF National Achievers Society
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology (NCSSSMST)
  • Ventures Scholars
Scholarship Value:  $2,500 ($10,000 over four years)
The Dean of Enrollment Services selects the Affinity Award recipients.  You are eligible for consideration if you’re graduating from an AICE or IB Diploma program; are a member of the FEF National Achievers Society or a Ventures Scholar; or are graduating from a member program of the NCSSSMST.  If you receive this award, we will add it to your Four Winds Award or Excellence Award.

IB Scholar Award

Scholarship Value:  $2,500 ($10,000 over four years)

We reserve a total of twenty scholarships for IB full Diploma Programme graduates who received the New College Junior Scholar Award in the junior year of high school.  New College Junior Scholars are selected by their high schools for exemplifying the shared educational missions of the International Baccalaureate Programme and New College.  If you receive this award, we will add it to your Four Winds or New College National Scholarship Program Award, and consider you for an Affinity Award.

New College Mathematics and Science Award

Scholarship value:  $18,000 ($72,000 over four years)

We reserve this scholarship for out-of-state students who were awarded the New College Mathematics and Science Medal in the junior year of high school.  New College Mathematics and Science Medalists are selected by their high schools for exemplifying the shared educational philosophies of New College and the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology.  This award supersedes the Four Winds, New College National Scholarship Program, and Affinity Awards.  An award nominee who is also a National Achievement Scholar, National Hispanic Scholar, or National Merit Scholar, will receive a total aggregate package of $20,000 per year to attend New College.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholar Award

Scholarship Value: $1,000 per year

Select dual enrollment students, who are members of Phi Theta Kappa and have a minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.5 (or higher), may be awarded this scholarship.  Completion of the AA degree is required.  Scholarship eligibility will be based upon the final college transcript(s).  If you receive this award, we will add it to your Four Winds or New College National Scholarship Program Award.

Latin American/Caribbean Scholarship Program Award

Scholarship Value: over $20,000
(The value of this renewable scholarship package is the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition)

The Dean of Enrollment Services will consider this scholarship program for US citizens and US Permanent Resident Aliens who reside in Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands, and for international students who are residents of Latin America and the Caribbean seeking an F-1 student visa to study at New College.

Need-Based Financial Aid

In addition to an academic scholarship, you could qualify for even more gift assistance if you are a US Citizen, or US Permanent Resident Alien, or qualified non-resident alien.  Complete the 2011-2012 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov  as soon as possible after January 1, 2011.  Our school code is 039574.  For Maximum Aid Eligibility: complete both your admission application file and your FAFSA by February 15, 2011 for priority consideration for need-based funding.

Be sure to read the endnotes below for important but cumbersome details.

1 Residency classification for tuition purposes.  If you think you might be an out-of-state resident for tuition purposes, please contact the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid to discuss this with your admissions counselor and request the out-of-state resident scholarship information.

2 Undocumented citizens do not qualify as eligible non-citizens.

3 New College will recalculate your high school GPA for admission consideration, and use this same GPA in the Institutional Rating calculator.  A 4.0 is the maximum GPA to affect the Institutional Rating.  For more information on high school GPA, please contact the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid to discuss this with your admissions counselor.

4 Scholarship packages may be funded by multiple sources.  If you qualify for more than one type of scholarship, you will be assigned only the highest level of award for which you are eligible (with the exception of the Affinity Award, IB Scholar Award, and PTK Scholar Award, which may supplement the highest level of award as noted).

5 For the New College Excellence Award, New College will supplement the student’s National Achievement® Finalist scholarship—corporate-sponsored or National Achievement® Scholarship—to guarantee the full amount.

6 For the New College Excellence Award, New College will supplement the student’s National Merit® Finalist scholarship—corporate-sponsored, college-sponsored, or National Merit® Scholarship—to guarantee the full amount.
