Biography:

What led you to choose NCF for this degree?
I came to New College my freshman year quite unsure of what I wanted to study. I didn't have a specific area of concentration in mind when I applied to the school. During my first year here, I was able to take a wide variety of classes in multiple divisions and I eventually narrowed my interests when I was introduced to topics I felt passionate about.

What do you like about NCF and your major?
It is wonderful to have the ability to create my own area of study. By combining both Anthropology and Environmental Studies I am able to explore themes and concepts from each of these fields to more specifically address my own personal interest in sustainable communities and development.

What do you value most about studying at NCF?
Aside from small class sizes and enthusiastic professors, the aspect of New College I most enjoy is being surrounded by intelligent, inquisitive students. The level at which students analyze and question concepts accepted as truths in the larger society is astounding. I am not particularly impressed with a person who knows the answer to a question I did not. Instead, I truly admire someone who raises a question I did not think to ask. The latter is the type of person I am surrounded by everyday here at New College and that is a true rarity.

An example of what makes NCF so special?
The small, intimate atmosphere of campus that is continuously promoting the exploration of new ideas and emphasizing the fact that there is always an opportunity to learn something new is what makes NCF so special. I constantly find myself reminded of this when I walk into our campus café and see professors having a cup of coffee and an in-depth discussion with students. Or when my fellow classmates and I have lunch with our language professor during which we are only allowed to speak in Spanish.

What internships, clinical's or class projects were especially important to your professional development?
During January of my first year I completed an internship in Key Largo with the Reef Environmental Education Foundation for my ISP. This project gave me a huge amount of hands-on experience. Not only did I go scuba diving and learn how to gather data on reef fish populations, I helped input and analyze this data from national marine sanctuaries in order to create specific regulations controlling the use of these areas. For my ISP this year I am going to stay in Costa Rica on an organic farm for sustainable living and education which will be indispensable to my understanding of how small sustainable communities operate.

How would you rate your experience at NCF overall?
My experience here at New College has been essential not only to my academic development but to my development as a member of this world. New College has taught me how to question, how to discuss, how to research, how to work with others, how to relate concepts in different fields, how to create an argument, how to analyze and constantly reminds me to remain open minded in all aspects of my life. The way in which I view the world has dramatically changed in only the year and half that I have been a student here. New College is allowing me to develop into a well rounded, educated, open minded person and that is something I would not exchange for anything.

In every day life, I’m a Resident Advisor for the Dort residence halls, a mechanic at the New College bike shop and currently working downtown with the organization Sustainable Sarasota on an eco-labeling project.

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to study abroad within the next year or two in a Spanish-speaking country and then continue on to graduate school in an Environmental Anthropology program or something closely related.
