Applying to Be a Student Writing Assistant

All currently enrolled New College students are eligible to apply to work as student writing assistants (SWAs).  The Writing Resource Center typically begins its comprehensive application process in mid-April in order to hire new SWAs for the following Fall semester.  The intensive SWA training period usually takes place in the two weeks before the start of classes in August.

We encourage all interested New College students to apply.  Look for hiring announcements from the WRC or stop by to pick up an application in mid-April.  Before then, prepare to apply by familiarizing yourself with the Writing Resource Center, engaging in writing conferences with current SWAs, and participating in writing workshops.

Procedure for Hiring Student Writing Assistants

The Writing Resource Center is as careful, thorough, and ethical as possible in the process of hiring student writing assistants. We focus on the positive by assessing each applicant’s strengths and determining how he or she would contribute to the staff as a whole. After reviewing all the applications and interviewing all the applicants, the WRC staff selects the candidate(s) with the skills and experience that best fit the center’s goals and activities for the upcoming year. Unfortunately, we are often unable to hire many qualified candidates; however, these candidates are encouraged to stay in contact with the WRC and to consider applying again in the future once more openings become available.

We take multiple factors into consideration during the hiring process; no single factor determines whether a candidate is hired. Below are some of the factors that we take into account when reviewing each applicant’s skills and experience. Other factors may be considered as well.

  • Awareness of the Writing Resource Center’s philosophy and objectives
  • Prior participation and demonstrated interest in WRC programs, including writing conferences and workshops
  • Interpersonal skills; a commitment to working with others
  • Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and tactfully with other students
  • Experience writing at New College
  • Knowledge of composition and stages of the writing process
  • Enthusiasm for engaging in all aspects of writing center work

Any questions about the hiring process should be directed to Jan Wheeler, the Director of the Writing Resource Center.
