Kiplinger's Coverage of "100 Best Values in Public Colleges"
College
Garners #6 National Ranking plus Photos and Editorial Lead in
February 2007 Issue
(January
17, 2007) -- New College of Florida has landed a prime spot in
the February 2007 issue of Kiplinger's Personal Finance
magazine, appearing as the editorial and photographic lead for
the magazine's feature article on the nation's "Best Values in
Public Colleges."
New College, which placed #6 overall in this year's rankings, is
joined by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (#1)
and the University of Florida (#2) as the primary schools
featured in this year's annual round up of the country's top 100
public colleges and universities that combine outstanding value
with a first-class education. This is the fourth straight time
that New College has been ranked among the Top Ten schools in
the Kiplinger's countdown.
The article, which opens with photographs of the New College
campus including College Hall, the student-run Four Winds Cafe,
and Professor Elzie McCord's class on General Toxicology,
includes comments from New College President Mike Michalson and
third-year student Ravi Banerjee from Darien, Connecticut.
Banerjee chose New College over Brown University, an Ivy League
school in Providence, Rhode Island, primarily because of the
freedom that New College allows its students in designing their
own courses of study. But, in doing so, he received a bargain as
well, according to Kiplinger's. The magazine reported
that annual costs at Brown can top $44,000 per year as compared
to the $27,000 per year Banerjee paid for tuition, fees, and
room and board at New College in 2006-2007. In-state students at
New College had it even better, paying less than $11,100 in
total costs for the 2006-2007 school year.
Kiplinger's compiles their list of "Best Values" based on
data collected from more than 500 colleges and universities
nationwide. In analyzing that data, the magazine's editors focus
first on measures of academic quality -- including the
percentage of the 2005-2006 incoming class scoring 600 or higher
on the verbal and math components of the SAT, admission and
retention rates, student-to-faculty ratios, and four and
six-year graduation rates -- followed by an analysis of cost and
financial aid available at each school.
New College President Mike Michalson, who opened the doors of
his class on Religious Existentialism to Kiplinger's reporter
Jane Bennett Clark for the article, said that the College was
honored to once again place near the top of the Kiplinger's
100. "New College is proud to offer outstanding students a
learning environment on par with the nation's leading private
colleges but at a public cost."
