'Power of Women' Series Returns for 2007-08

New College Foundation program expands mentoring efforts

(August 27, 2007) The Power of Women (PoW) introduces the extraordinary women of the Sarasota-Bradenton area to the extraordinary students of New College of Florida, the state’s public honors college.  By bringing together these constituencies in a variety of forums open to the public, the College hopes to provide meaningful and enjoyable experiences, as well as networking opportunities for all participants.

The Power of Women was launched last spring with two presentations featuring successful women entrepreneurs and artists, among them cosmetics pioneer Flori Roberts and opera singer/philanthropist Lee Peterson.  The participants spoke about their careers and responded to questions from the audience and a panel of New College women. This year's series has been expanded to four programs, each with a stellar group of keynote speakers.

An expanded mentoring program is also being introduced this year.

"Our goal is to make the partnership between students and women in the community more personal," states New College alumna Felice Schulaner, retired SVP of Coach Leather, PoW participant and Steering Committee member. “Consistent with the spirit and philosophy of New College, we have launched a mentoring program tailored to the unique needs and interests of all participants --students, alumni, and community volunteers.”  Schulaner says that there will not be a ‘one size fits all’ approach.  Women interested in participating will be invited to post their ‘mentor profile’ on a website that is being created by the New College Foundation.  Students will take the initiative to approach possible mentors to discuss partnerships.

The three remaining programs will feature Women in Law, Finance and Business (November 15), Women in Education (February 12) and Women in Media, Communications and Entertainment (March 18).  The latter will be moderated by Susan Burns, editor of biz941 and a New College alumna.

The Steering Committee for Power of Women includes a powerhouse of prominent area women: Susan M. Atherton, B.J. Creighton, Patricia Hanahan Engman, Elaine Mason Keating, Jean M. Martin, Helen Nugent, Felice Schulaner, Flori Roberts, and Jane T. Smiley.  New College Foundation leadership is being provided by Carol Carter, vice president of advancement.

All sessions begin at 4 pm and take place on the campus of New College of Florida, 5800 Bay Shore Road. Donations to attend the Power of Women series will go toward a scholarship fund for New College women.  The donation is $25 per session, or $92 for the series of four. Complimentary receptions follow each program. New College students, staff and faculty may attend at no charge.
