Tampa Bay Business Journal
Names New College's Michalson A Leader to Watch in 2007
(January
11, 2007) -- New College of Florida President Mike Michalson has
been named to the Tampa Bay Business Journal's list of
business, education, and health care leaders whom they predict
will have the biggest impact on the state in 2007. The
list appears in the January 5 issue of the TBBJ.
In its Futurecast 2007 article entitled "Doing
Business in 2007: People to Watch in the Year Ahead," the editors of
the Tampa Bay Business Journal write, "Michalson is leading
the state's honors college for the liberal arts as it embarks on
life with its own campus and begins implementing millions of dollars
worth of capital improvements in its master plan." The editors also
cite Michalson's recent appointment as Vice President-elect for the
Florida Association of Colleges and Universities as an indicator of
the high esteem held for Michalson by the presidents of Florida's
public and private colleges, universities and community colleges.
This past fall, New College broke ground on a
$28 million construction project to build five new residence halls
on campus, initiated talks with Sarasota County and the University
of Florida on the development of a Florida Land Institute, and
completed negotiations with the Sarasota-Bradenton International
Airport toward a $4 million land purchase by the College.
Michalson was appointed President of New
College of Florida by the College's Board of Trustees on January 7,
2003, following a 13-month national search. Prior to that, he served
as Acting President of New College from 2001 to 2003 and as Dean and
Warden of New College of USF from 1992 to 1997. He holds a
Ph.D. in Religion from Princeton University and has taught at
Oberlin College, where he also served as Chair for the Department of
Religion, and at Davidson College in addition to his tenure at New
College of Florida.
