Senior Adesh Seuraj plans to donate scholarship

(May 14, 2007) Thesis student Adesh Seuraj, who graduates May 25 from New College of Florida, is the 2007 recipient of the Phyllis Turner Scholarship from the Sarasota Succulent Society.

The $500 scholarship, offered to one Sarasota-area college student per year, is for tuition and textbooks. The soon-to-graduate student, however, plans to donate his award to ecological organizations, such as Greenpeace and Conservation for Wild Ethics.

Seuraj, who is originally from Trinidad-Tobago, is a double major in chemistry and environmental studies at New College. For his senior thesis, he has conducted research to create biodegradable plastics using plants – in his study, switchgrass – instead of oil.

After graduating, Seuraj will teach for a year as a chemistry instructor at St. Mary's College in Trinidad, West Indies. He plans a career as an environmental chemist.
