Campus Master Plan
In 2006, New College undertook its most ambitious re-visioning of the campus since the College’s inception in 1960. With the help of internationally acclaimed urban planners Moule & Polyzoides, New College developed a forward looking master plan that envisions development of the campus out over the next 30 years. Students, faculty and staff all played integral parts in the plan’s development. The bold new vision is environmentally progressive and will create a more seamless relationship between academics and residential life.
The first project completed under the master plan was the opening of five new residence halls in the fall of 2007. The new buildings feature flat and tabled roots and high, timbered ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows in the public living rooms to make good use of natural Florida sunshine. All have been built in general accordance with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System to reduce negative environmental effects of buildings and improve occupant health and well-being.
Construction of the new residence halls has paved the way for renovation of the College’s historic I.M. Pei dorms and courtyards surrounding Palm Court, as well as major improvements to Hamilton Center, the student union also designed by Pei. In 2008-09, we anticipate breaking ground on a new Academic/Administrative Building for classrooms and offices. On the drawing board for 2010 is a Center for International and Area Studies to support enhanced programming in a field of study so vital in today’s global marketplace. By 2013, we expect to build a mixed-used and recreational complex on a strategically-situated parcel on the corner of University Parkway and North Tamiami Trail. The plan also calls for a nearby retail “Village Center” that will benefit the local community and students alike.
To the right are links to the plan so that you, too, can share in this exciting vision of New College’s future. We also invite you to contact the New College Foundation to find out how you can participate in the public-private partnership that will be needed to make our vision come to life.
