Courses
New College faculty offer courses
and laboratories in over 30 academic fields. Sixty-one percent of
the courses have 19 or fewer students; only 17 percent have 30 or
more students (fall 2001 data). All courses and labs are taught by
faculty, none by graduate assistants (there are no graduate students
at New College).
Courses typically allow
opportunity for discussion, and many involve student presentations
of individual and/or team projects. There's an emphasis on use of
primary source materials and even introductory courses tend to treat
the subject matter in depth.
Unlike most colleges and
universities, New College does not list courses in a catalog. This
is because at New College, course offerings change continually to
reflect the changing state of knowledge in each field, and changing
faculty and student interests. Thus, the course list published has
only the courses offered in this particular year or semester, not
all courses available. (click

Tutorials
After you get to know members of
the faculty, and you develop interests that cannot be fully met
through the course offerings, you will formulate ideas for tutorials
and independent reading projects. You take your proposal to the
appropriate faculty in the appropriate academic field, and if you
both agree, you design a plan for study and place the tutorial into
your next academic contract.
