Caples Fine Arts Complex

Nestled amid native pines and lazy palms on the New College campus, and situated next to the Ralph Caples Mansion and the Ringling Museum of Art, the Caples Fine Arts Complex is a haven for student artists and performers.  A quadrangle of buildings arranged around a picturesque courtyard, "Caples" provides a setting where ideas flow freely and where creative energy abounds.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Caples Fine Arts Complex is committed to fostering New College students’ creativity by providing the tools necessary to explore an interest in the visual and/or performing arts.  Here students are encouraged to learn, to create, to compose, to entertain, to inspire, and to become masters of their art.  While training the next generation of artists, the Caples Fine Arts Complex is equally committed to furthering the cultural development of Sarasota and the surrounding region by hosting visiting artists from around the world and providing a venue for local artists to perform and exhibit.

HISTORY OF THE CAPLES CAMPUS

In 1889, Ohioans Ralph and Ellen Caples became enamored with Sarasota Bay on their honeymoon and eventually built a mansion on its shores.  Ralph, a friend and business associate of John Ringling, induced John and Mable Ringling to also make Sarasota their home.  Ralph and John were probably the most important promoters and developers of Sarasota, Florida, in the first quarter of the 20th century.

In 1973, Mrs. Caples donated her 12.6 acre bay front land and home to New College.  The Caples Fine Arts Complex is a fitting tribute to Mrs. Caples who was a soloist with the First Presbyterian Church in New York and had a lifelong interest in promoting the arts in Sarasota.
