LOTA
MUNDY MUSIC BUILDING
At
the Lota Mundy Music Building, all the needs of the New College
music student have been collected and conveniently housed under one
roof. The building
features an electronic music studio with equipment for both digital
and analog musical composition, four practice rooms and
several audio-equipped seminar rooms and office/studios. The
environment supports composition, self-paced instruction and
performance.

The
music
program at New College combines comprehensive music studies in
an intimate humanistic setting with an emphasis on fulfilling each
individual’s special potential. Students concentrating in music
can elect to focus on historical, anthropological, critical, or
theoretical approaches to music or create their own areas of
concentration.
NAMESAKE
Lota Mundy was one of Sarasota’s leading
musicians, teachers and benefactors.
Until her death in 1970, she was one of the Florida West
Coast Symphony’s most active and generous supporters.
She joined the orchestra in 1951 and played with them for the
next 16 years (part of that time as assistant concertmaster).
The Florida String Quartet and the Sarasota Music Festival
owe their existence to her efforts.
Ms. Mundy was active on the Symphony Board for 19 years (5
years as Board President). Under
her leadership, the Symphony developed two youth orchestras, a
summer string program and one of the most extensive youth musical
education programs in the country. Photos
