The Faculty

"The students here discover that by assuming responsibility in the classroom, the line between teacher and student can become wonderfully blurred. My students have in fact taught me a lot more than they may realize. Likewise, through my discussions with colleagues in other disciplines, my critical perspective on music has been expanded, and this has had a major impact on my teaching, composing, and scholarship."
-
Dr. Stephen T. Miles, Associate Professor of Music

New College is a place for engaged learning. New College faculty teach courses, evaluate student work and lecture, but learning at New College never ends with lectures. A New College professor is a mentor whose goal is to help you gain independent mastery, so you can pose the question, gather the data, and evaluate answers on your own.

Skilled mentoring is rooted in superior academic preparation; without it, a college teacher, however gifted in dialogue with students, lacks the knowledge on which effective mentoring is built. Over 95 percent of the New College faculty hold the earned doctorate; most publish or show their work frequently. All are at New College full-time.

Listed with each area of concentration are the names, alma maters, research and teaching interests of each of the professors.
